The Renault Twingo is Renault's answer to everything from the stylish Fiat 500 to the sensible Hyundai i10. It's engine is mounted under the boot and is also rear-wheel drive, but it's still only average to drive. There's plenty of space inside, though, and it's well equipped. There's also plenty of scope for personalisation with different alloy wheel designs, exterior decals and a folding fabric roof.

The chic Renault Clio has been a popular supermini choice for years, thanks to its combination of French flair, keen pricing and low running costs. The latest version has a more focused range, with the three-door hatchback and estate versions of old being dropped in favour of just a single five-door hatchback body. The efficient diesel and punchy petrol engines really boost the Clio's appeal, while petrolheads will be drawn to the high-performance RS version.

The Renault Captur is the French company's entry into the small SUV market. It's based on the same platform as the Renault Clio, and is designed to offer more space than the supermini. It's a rival for small crossover models such as the Nissan Juke and Vauxhall Mokka, although it promises to be more spacious than either of these two. The Renault Captur has been designed to offer MPV-like practicality inside, and there is lots of kit as standard, while Renault's excellent 1.5-litre diesel means sub-100g/km emissions are on offer. Prices are competitive with rivals in the class.

The Renault Kadjar is a crossover SUV which shares its platform with the Nissan Qashqai. It's rivals include not only Nissan's offering but cars like the Mazda CX-5, the Skoda Yeti, the Kia Sportage and the Hyundai ix35 and manages to be very competitive against all of them. Fuel economy is impressive, as the mid-range diesel can produce up more than 70mpg and emissions under 100g/km. The Kadjar has a more spacious boot than its Nissan sister car and the seats can be folded flat with the pull of just one lever. Most models are well equipped, but the top Signature Nav model can become expensive.

watch videoRenault Scenic
The Renault Scenic is Renault's rival to the Ford C-MAX and Citroen C4 Picasso. Thanks to a cleverly packaged interior, the Renault Scenic remains quite small on the outside, making it very easy to drive. However, the Renault Scenic's real strength is its well thought out interior, which has five generously sized seats and a decent boot. For buyers after a little extra boot space and an extra pair of seats, Renault also offers a longer Renault Grand Scenic version.

Renault's Twizy is like nothing else on the road. It's a four-wheeled tandem two-seater that crosses a scooter with a car. There are no side windows and even the scissor doors are optional. It is powered by a 13bhp electric motor that takes around three-and-a-half hours to fully charge from a conventional socket. This gives the Renault Twizy a range of around 50 miles, while a top speed of 50mph means it will be able to keep pace only with urban traffic.
