While other small SUVs are road-biased machines with cutesy looks, the Jeep Renegadelooks tough and has the off-road ability to match its image. Buyers can choose from 1.4-litre petrol, 1.6-litre and 2.0-litre diesel engines. The petrol is the quickest, while the diesels are cheaper to run. Most will be happy with the 1.6-litre diesel, which offers the best economy, even if it is pretty slow. Inside, there's plenty of headroom and a decent-sized boot, although legroom in the back may be tight for adults.

The Jeep Cherokee offers decent off-road performance in a small but capable package. Thanks to powerful diesel engines and impressive ground clearance, there's very little that can stand it its way. It's more comfortable than the old car, but it still isn't much fun to drive – with soft suspension meaning it rolls a lot in the corners. There are three trim levels – Longitude is the entry-level, Longitude+ is the mid-range offering, while top-spec is Limited.

Think of it as America's Land Rover Defender – unstoppable off-road and very hard wearing. It's never been quite as popular in the UK as it is in the USA, as Land Rover is so well established on the British market, but the Wrangler is a worthy alternative. It's as butch as they come, with rugged, retro looks, too.

The latest Grand Cherokee retains Jeep's legendary off-road reputation, but adds a plusher cabin, much like the Range Rover's. Standard kit is generous, including alloy wheels, part-leather trim, climate control and electric seats. The cabin is very spacious, but four people can travel in comfort. Comfort and interior quality falls just short of European rivals, but even the basic model is very well equipped.
