Dacia
Dacia is the budget brand of Renault, and its cars share many common parts with Renault models in an effort to minimise costs and deliver excellent value for money. The firm launched in the UK in the summer of 2012 with the Dacia Duster 4x4, and it's rapidly establishing itself as the value brand to be reckoned with. Its commitment to value-for-money cars and its no-haggle pricing policy is the reason why Dacia won the 2013 CarBuyer Buyer's Award.

The budget Dacia Sandero is the cheapest passenger car on sale in the UK. Yet, although you have to pay extra for luxuries like a radio, it still represents fantastic value for money. So even though equipment is pared to the bone (and goodies like a radio and electric windows are standard on higher-spec models), the Dacia Sandero offers the space, practicality and safety of a supermini for the price of a much smaller city car.

The Dacia Logan MCV is the UK's cheapest new estate car, joining the rest of Dacia's bargain line-up - the Dacia Sandero, Dacia Sandero Stepway and Dacia Duster SUV. The Dacia Logan MCV (Maximum Capacity Vehicle) is a five-seat version of the Dacia Sandero and comes with the same model and engine line-up. Like all Dacias, the entry-level Access model is pretty basic (no stereo, for example), but higher-spec Ambiance and Laureate models actually offer a decent range of equipment. Economy and emissions also mirror the Dacia Sandero, so expect mpg to range from the high 40s to mid-50s, depending on the engine, and to emit between 99 and 137g/km of CO2.

The Dacia Duster is a pretty unusual proposition, in that it's a compact SUV but its starting price is about the same as a Ford Fiesta or Renault Twingo. Dacia manages this by taking old technology – in this case from an old Renault – and selling models with the bare minimum of equipment. In the case of the entry-level Duster, that means no air-con, no electric windows and no radio. You can add all of these things – and more – and the Duster will still be cheaper than all its rivals. And the most striking thing is that it's actually pretty good to drive.
