The Lexus CT 200h is a premium hatchback designed to compete with the Audi A3 and BMW 1 Series, although it's unique in the class, because it uses the same petrol-electric hybrid power system as the Toyota Prius. The five-door model is quiet and comfortable around town, but it can't quite match diesel opponents for economy. Low emissions of this system mean the Lexus CT has cheaper tax bills than rivals of a similar price and performance.

The sporty-looking Lexus IS saloon has a high-quality interior and proven reliability. However, it's not as good to drive as rivals like the BMW 3 Series and is let down by average practicality and lacklustre fuel economy figures – particularly for the petrol-engined IS 300.

The Lexus NX is a compact SUV designed to rival the BMW X3 and Audi Q5. It boasts outlandish styling, some comfortable seats and low running costs for company car drivers. It's a shame there's no diesel engine, but with Lexus committed to a future of hybrid drivetrains, it's unlikely we'll see one in the near future.

The hi-tech Lexus GS is only available as a hybrid, but thanks to its powerful petrol-electric motor it's extremely quick and very smooth to drive. Inside, luxury and comfort is the name of the game – and cars come packed with advanced features, like radar cruise control and satellite navigation. It's a genuine alternative to rivals like the BMW 5 Series thanks to its class leading quietness and hi-tech extras.

The Lexus RC is a high-performance coupe in the mould of the BMW 4 series and Audi A5. Shunning the trend for fitting diesel engines, Lexus offers the two-door coupe with a 2.0-litre petrol engine in the 200t, a hybrid in the 300h and a thumping 5.0-litre V8 in the RC F. It's not as much fun in corners as an 4 series, but it's surprisingly easy to drive. It'll remain a much rarer sight on the road compared to the BMW, too.

Like Lexus's other hybrid cars, the Lexus RX 450h is powered by a petrol engine and electric motor. The so-called ‘soft roader’ is pitched as an alternative to diesel powered 4x4s and offers reasonable economy and low emissions. This four-wheel-drive model includes two electric motors that power the Lexus at low speeds making the car extremely quiet. It looks smart and is well built and reliable, but offers limited off road ability.

The Lexus LS is a huge luxury saloon that sets the benchmark for cabin quietness on the move. It's powered by a V8 petrol engine that's mated to an electric motor, and offers more standard equipment than you could possibly imagine. Even entry-level models are generously appointed, but you'd expect so on this kind of car - particularly as the Lexus LS doesn't come cheap.
