Range Rover's Evoque has rewritten the 4x4 rulebook. It delivers the emissions of a much smaller car and the sharp handling of a sports coupé, but still manages to be as smooth and comfortable as Range Rover's larger models. The 2.0-litre diesel engines are efficient, too, returning close to 60mpg. The car is impressive around town, off-road and on long journeys, while the sharp looks mean you won’t go unnoticed, either.

The Range Rover Sport is a very versatile car. The Range Rover Sport condenses the essence of the Range Rover into a more driver-oriented package, but it's still very good off-road. If you can live with the extrovert styling, it's a versatile luxury family car. Admittedly, it does have a thirst for fuel - especially the insanely powerful Supercharged petrol model. Unless you really feel the need for supercar rivalling acceleration, go for the entry level diesel. It's powerful and more fuel efficient.

Buyers can choose between standard-wheelbase or long-wheelbase versions, with the latter providing a little extra room in the back seats. Whichever you choose, this is a huge car and it comes with running costs to match. If you’ve got deep pockets, we’d say it's absolutely worth it, though. We reckon it sees off the challenge of rivals such as theBMW X5, Mercedes GL and Audi Q7.

The Land Rover Defender is a British institution, an iconic vehicle that has an amazing and deserved reputation for its off-road ability. Launched in 1948, it's been around for a long time, and it's very crude to drive on the road. If you really, really need something to get you into the wildest of wilds on a daily basis then the Land Rover Defender is a great choice, but it's expensive to buy and to run, noisy inside and not very comfortable to drive.

With its chunky styling, The Land Rover Freelander 2 looks like a junior Land Rover Discovery 4. This gives it real credibility among rivals like the BMW X3 and Audi Q5. Add Land Rover's legendary reputation for producing rugged off-road vehicles and it's clear why the Land Rover Freelander 2 still appeals when faced with newer German rivals. Fine to drive on-road and very capable off it, the Land Rover Freelander 2 is a brilliant all-rounder, though it's not exactly what we would describe as cheap.
